Dina usually starts her designs with the stones themselves because there is so much beauty in the natural minerals but she is also inspired by the everyday -from nature and architecture to interesting silhouettes or color combinations. She favors clean lines that are feminine, not fussy. A long time geode and mineral collector, Dina works with all natural gemstones rather than synthetic materials and each piece is handcrafted. As a busy woman who wears a lot of different hats in life, Dina developed the opening hinged bail so that she and her customers could have the ultimate in versatility, whether it is to mix and match between chains and semi-precious necklaces or to just keep adding pendants to one of their chains. The Intaglio collection reflects Dina's Italian heritage and her influences from time living in Florence. The Intaglio colors and imagery add a beautiful dimension to her line. Dina first began designing in only 18k gold and sterling silver, and only later added her vermeil line when the price of gold skyrocketed because she wanted her line to be more accessible. She still has a fine jewelry aesthetic but has changed the metals she uses. The scale of her pieces is born out of her stylistic perspective on what looks balanced and proportionate on her own body. Dina notes that her customer looks for high quality jewelry that is interesting and distinctive, yet they are not driven by brand name only. The Dina Mackney customer transcends age. She studied at The Parsons School of Design, the University of Virginia and the British Institute of Florence in Italy. Dina’s designs have been featured in various publications and worn by celebrities but Dina prides herself most on the women who wear her pieces every day.
